The glow plug light starts flashing usually just after start up, but pulling up and restarting usually clears the problem and the car drives fine. No smoke etc. The car has been into a Ford dealership and the OBD diagnostics reveal nothing. This instils you with confidence.

Here's 2 easy steps to check for them.. 1) locate the turbo actuator, get somebody to start the car whilst you watch the actuator. It should without engine running be positioned closest to the windscreen.

Unfortunately, on the 2012 Ford Focus 2.0 TDCI, I am going in blind. I have had different info from different dealers as to what filter type I have (canister vs spin on).
I have the same problem with my 2003 Mondeo tdci. 120k. Glow plug light came on during a trip down to Cornwall. Now its hard to start when left overnight. Car runs fine once engine is warmed up tho. Checked my glow plugs and none of them was working so thought that must be the problem. Replaced with four new NKG.

The glow plugs should stay on for five to fifteen seconds (depending on outside temp). This means they should stay on for about 5 seconds at an outside temp of 35 to 40 degrees f. Longer when it is colder. I am not sure if the Focus even has this device or if it is controlled the the ECU. To test a glow plug, all you need is a test light.
